A doctor that treats young patients offers a welcoming, kid-friendly office to set children and their parents at ease as they settle into their office environment. Our Invisalign® orthodontist explains the main differences between pediatric orthodontics and adult orthodontics below.

What Is A Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric dentist has specialized knowledge of orthodontic problems that affect children. Pediatric dentists also have special training in taking care of young patients and ensuring that they are comfortable during evaluations. Pediatric dentists are experts at getting children to cooperate during treatment. Some methods that pediatric dentists employ include using kid-friendly terminology and being patient to keep the child calm. Dental tools may also be decorated in a more fun way for the kids.

How Are Children’s Teeth Different?

Children have dental and orthodontic issues that differ from adults. For example, kids may have developmental problems in the jaw and face that are easily treated during childhood. It is always ideal to have your child evaluated as soon as possible to find out if they need early treatment. Another issue that can be addressed is bad habits that affect the teeth, like thumb-sucking or overuse of pacifiers. Additionally, cavity prevention is critical for children, so there are regular prevention methods, like fluoride treatments or sealants.

Evaluations Specific For Children

Sometimes, it is recommended that infants be evaluated for early signs of cavities. For older children, early orthodontic treatments can prevent misaligned bites – some children may have jaws that are too small, creating crowding of the teeth. Devices like palatal expanders, which widen the roof of the mouth to make room for incoming teeth, can prevent future bite problems, and it is important that this treatment is started at a young age.

Best Orthodontist in Binghamton, NY, Answers: What Is Bruxism? https://muenchorthodontics.com/best-orthodontist-binghamton-ny/ Fri, 26 Jul 2019 13:00:19 +0000 https://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=30463 best orthodontist binghamton nyTeeth clenching and grinding, also known as bruxism, is a common problem. It’s something you might have experienced from time to time. It generally happens during periods of stress or anxiety and may occur during the day or even while you sleep. If clenching or grinding goes away after the stressful time has passed, it’s most likely not a big concern. However, bruxism can be a symptom of larger problems that can cause serious issues with your smile. The best orthodontist in Binghamton, NY, provides some information below.

Causes of Bruxism

Bruxism can have multiple causes. Chronic stress and anxiety are likely to cause bruxism. In addition to this, bruxism can also be caused by a misaligned bite, as your jaw is overworked trying to get your teeth to fit together. If you are prone to this condition, triggers such as alcohol consumption, chewing gum, or caffeine may worsen the grinding.

Negative Effects of Bruxism

If left untreated, bruxism will wear away your tooth enamel, leaving your teeth exposed to bacteria. Bruxism can also cause broken teeth, increase the need for root canals and crowns, and worsen symptoms of TMJ disorder. If you experience any of the following for an extended period of time, you should contact our orthodontist for an evaluation:

  • Soreness in the jaw
  • Popping in the jaw
  • Achiness in the face
  • Cracked teeth
  • Grinding during the night, sometimes noticed by a partner
  • Wear on teeth from grinding
  • Tooth sensitivity

Treatments for Bruxism

If your bruxism is caused by a misaligned bite, our orthodontist will work to correct it with braces or other methods to align your teeth. For anxiety and stress, trying to gain control of the stressors is critical. If you mainly grind your teeth at night, our orthodontist may also recommend a mouthguard to protect your teeth.

Invisalign Dentist in Vestal, NY, Answers: How Much Do Braces Cost? https://muenchorthodontics.com/invisalign-dentist-vestal-ny/ Fri, 12 Jul 2019 13:00:13 +0000 https://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=30458 invisalign dentist vestal nyIf you’ve been considering braces for yourself or your child, you may be wondering about the average costs of orthodontic treatment. However, there’s not one flat price for all treatment; your health insurance, the severity of the orthodontic problem, and type of braces you choose will determine how much your treatment will cost. Our Invisalign® dentist in Vestal, NY, explains the different types of treatments and possible costs associated with each below!

What Determines Cost?

The main factors that determine the cost of braces are the type of braces you choose, the length of time the braces need to be worn, and any extra treatment steps needed, such as tooth extractions. Generally, braces vary in cost based on the above factors, and what our orthodontist determines is needed to get your perfect smile.

Adults may have a higher cost of treatment than children in general, since treatment usually takes longer and is more likely to require other steps, such as surgery.

Types of Braces

Traditional braces. The cost of traditional metal braces is determined by the length of time needed, generally between one to three years, and your specific orthodontic case. This can be discussed with our orthodontist at the time of your consultation.

Invisalign. This treatment involves multiple plastic aligners given over a period of time, and tend to cost slightly more. However, with plastic aligners, the cost depends on how many aligners are needed to correct your smile.

Your Specific Orthodontic Issues

We understand that the cost of treatment is a big consideration. However, it is important to take care of any serious orthodontic issues as soon as you can. Over time, orthodontic issues only worsen and can cost even more down the road. Crowded teeth, underbites, and overbites can all affect the shape of the face and jaw, causing pain, discomfort, and abnormal movement of the teeth. Consider talking with our orthodontist to determine your cost of treatment and payment plans, if necessary!

Invisalign in Owego, NY, Specialist Recommends Early Treatment https://muenchorthodontics.com/invisalign-owego-ny/ Fri, 28 Jun 2019 13:00:02 +0000 https://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=30083 Many candidates for orthodontic treatment tend to wait until their teen years to begin correcting their smile. However, earlier treatment can be more effective when correcting a misaligned bite or crooked teeth. As a person ages, their palate (roof of the mouth) hardens, making it more difficult to move the teeth and mouth tissues with orthodontic appliances. Our specialist for Invisalign® in Owego, NY, explains more below.

What Happens As We Age?

As a child, the roof of the mouth (palate) is soft since the tissues haven’t yet fused together. As children get older, these tissues fuse and harden, making orthodontic treatment more difficult. The younger you treat conditions such as underbite, misalignment, or a crowded bite, the quicker and easier these procedures will be.

Benefits of Early Correction

Since it is easier to adjust the bite of a younger child, treatment is often shorter in duration and less painful because of their softer mouth tissues. Additionally, the risk for further orthodontic and dental issues, such as tooth decay and gum disease, goes up the longer you wait to start treatment. Not to mention, early treatment can help preserve self-esteem, as getting metal braces or other visible orthodontic treatments in the late teens can lead to self-consciousness.

Treatments for Young Children

There are a few conditions that must be treated as young as possible. If your child has a problem with teeth crowding, there may not be enough room for all of their teeth to grow in. This can cause many issues down the road—and palatal expanders can help by expanding the palate to make room for new teeth. Palatal expanders are simply installed in the roof of the mouth and are gradually widened to expand the upper jaw.

It is critical that palatal expanders are installed during childhood, while the bones in the mouth are still pliable. This process is not possible in adulthood, and surgery will be needed to fix a crowded mouth.

Specialist for Damon Braces in Endicott Gives Advice on Common Braces Issues https://muenchorthodontics.com/damon-braces-endicott/ Fri, 21 Sep 2018 13:00:47 +0000 http://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=1280 damon braces endicottThere are a lot of problems you can run into while wearing braces. The wires, the brackets, the bands, the spacers…there are so many parts involved! If something goes wrong, it’s ideal to make an appointment with our specialist for Damon braces in Endicott for repairs and to check that everything is properly in place. However, in the meantime, there are some steps you can take to handle problems until your appointment:

#1: What To Do If Your Wire Breaks

If your wire breaks, it is no longer effective in moving your teeth. It’s imperative that you make an appointment with our orthodontist to fix this issue. However, a broken wire is usually painful or annoying, as the wire may poke into your cheek or gums and create a sore.

Until you see our orthodontist, try pushing the wire back up with a pencil to secure it. If this doesn’t work, use a bit of orthodontic wax to cover the end. If the wire has already created a sore, rinse with antiseptic or saltwater to prevent infection. Never try to cut the wire yourself.

#2: If Your Bracket Becomes Loose

Brackets tend to come loose after eating things that you’re not supposed to, like crunchy or chewy foods. There is a layer of resin covering your tooth that the bracket is set on, and these tough foods can disrupt the stability of the resin. The bracket may move or break as a result.

Make an appointment with our orthodontist in the case of a broken or loose bracket. In the meantime, you can use some orthodontic wax to cover the bracket to prevent it from poking your cheek or tongue.

#3: What To Do If Your Spacers Become Loose

The intention of spacers is to create gaps in your teeth for bands to be placed. If your spacers become loose or fall out, make an appointment with our orthodontist. It is likely that you’re ready to have your bands put on!

Tips for Your Brightest Smile from the Best Orthodontist in Vestal, NY https://muenchorthodontics.com/best-orthodontist-in-vestal-ny/ Fri, 31 Aug 2018 13:00:10 +0000 http://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=1275 best orthodontist in vestal nyYou put a lot of effort into your orthodontic health and the last thing you want is to have stained teeth! The best orthodontist in Vestal, NY, has outlined some tips below on how to prevent stains and keep your teeth healthy and bright.

#1: Brush & Floss Twice Each Day

Use a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash twice a day to stop staining before it starts. Be sure to use a whitening toothpaste that also contains fluoride, as fluoride protects the teeth, reduces enamel loss and prevents tooth decay. Keep up on flossing twice daily to remove plaque, bacteria, and ensure that your gums are healthy.

#2: Avoid Certain Foods & Drinks That Damage & Stain the Teeth

Acidic foods and drinks contribute to the weakening and erosion of enamel. As enamel erodes, the underlying dentin is exposed, making the teeth appear more yellow and more prone to stains. Drinks such as soda, coffee, tea and wine are acidic and contain compounds that stain the teeth, so it is best to avoid them.

If you do consume acidic foods or beverages, be sure to rinse your mouth with water immediately after.

#3: Kick Bad Habits that Stain Your Teeth & Damage Enamel

Smoking is a bad habit that can prevent you from attaining the bright smile you want. Smoking tobacco not only causes damage to the gums and surrounding tissues in your mouth, but it also leaves brown stains on your teeth that are hard to remove.

Other habits to kick are teeth grinding and clenching, as the pressure will wear down enamel over time and lead to staining. Grinding can also cause damage to orthodontic devices.

Since grinding sometimes only occurs during sleep and you may be unaware of it, you should have your bite checked and have a nightguard made to protect your teeth if there is evidence of grinding.

Our Vestal, NY, Orthodontist Gives Back to School Tips for Kids with Braces https://muenchorthodontics.com/vestal-ny-orthodontist/ Fri, 24 Aug 2018 12:00:04 +0000 http://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=1270 vestal ny orthodontistSummer is over, and school is starting up again! It’s a hectic time: keeping track of new schedules for the year, planning after-school activities, and scheduling orthodontic appointments. When making lists for back-to-school shopping for your child with braces, our Vestal, NY, orthodontist wants you to keep the tips below in mind.

#1: Healthy Snacks

It’s important to teach your child healthy eating habits while keeping their braces in mind. Avoid sugary foods, as the teeth are more prone to decay with braces on, and hard, chewy, or crunchy snacks like nuts, pretzels or fruit gummies as they can damage brackets and irritate the gums. Some great healthy snacks for your child with braces are foods such as:

  • Steamed vegetables
  • Soft crackers
  • Soft fruits like kiwis and strawberries
  • Yogurt
  • Soft Cheeses
  • Hard-boiled eggs

Pack your child’s lunch with soft sandwiches like banana or easy-to-chew lunch meat alongside these braces-safe snacks.

#2: Travel-Sized Dental Care Packages

Brushing and flossing are integral to the health of your child’s teeth. For kids with braces, it’s crucial to do it after every meal, as food particles can easily become trapped between teeth and stick to brackets.

Send your child to school with a travel-sized dental package to encourage their dental routine. The package should contain a small tube of toothpaste, a mini-toothbrush and a roll of floss. With this on hand, it will make it convenient for your child to care for their braces between classes.

#3: Mouth Protection for Those Who Play Sports

It is vital for your child to protect their teeth and braces when playing sports. Mouthguards protect the teeth from injury and can prevent damage to braces. Here at Muench Orthodontics, we can make custom-fitted devices and mouthguards to protect your child’s teeth. Call us today to learn more!

Nice Ice Advice from Our Vestal Orthodontist https://muenchorthodontics.com/nice-ice-advice-from-our-vestal-pediatric-dentist-orthodontist/ Fri, 27 Jul 2018 17:43:55 +0000 http://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=1264

vestal pediatric dentist and orthodontist

Chill Out on Ice Chewing

Relaxing with a cool beverage on a hot day can be incredibly refreshing. The small, melty ice cubes clinking around at the bottom of your glass quickly cool you down and quench your thirst. Even better, chewing the ice that’s keeping your beverage cool, right?

If you wear braces you probably already know this practice is a no-no, says our Vestal pediatric dentist and orthodontist, Dr. Meunch. If you find yourself absently – and happily – chewing away at a couple ice cubes after you’ve finished a drink, you’re not alone. There are many people who enjoy chewing ice not just incidentally but as a matter of habit. It can be oddly satisfying to crunch your way through an ice cube, adds our orthodontist in Vestal.

Do You Enjoy Crunching Ice?

Even if you are a patient who is straightening your teeth with Invisalign and can remove your aligners, it’s a BAD habit to have. And – though it may be enjoyable to you – it can certainly be annoying to the people around you. The need to chew ice can also be a sign of a more serious medical condition. (Be sure to check with your doctor if you have concerns.) It’s not so great for your teeth either, which is why the American Dental Association recommends avoiding persistent ice chewing to prevent tooth injuries such as cracked or chipped teeth, enamel damage, or gum injuries. Your teeth are simply not built for the wear and tear caused by eating bags or trays of ice every day and can wreak havoc on your orthodontic work.

Love Shaved Ice or Slushies?

You can continue to enjoy them, says our orthodontic team in Vestal, (although those type of sugary treats should be limited too!) The damage to braces is usually caused by chomping on the hunks of ice rattling around in the bottom of your glass, or worse, ice cubes straight from the freezer.

What’s an Ice Chewer to Do?

If you have severe ice cravings, you need to find out why. It’s important to seek proper diagnosis and treatment. Any behavior that is not done in moderation can cause problems and chewing ice is one of them. Additionally, if you’re having jaw pain or toothaches, let Muench Orthodontics in Vestal know, as we may be able to help you avoid serious damage to your teeth and jaw.

In the meantime, Meunch Orthodontics suggests that you try to let the ice dissolve in your mouth rather than chewing. Or, you could try sucking on semi-melted ice slivers instead of cubes, to prevent any damage to your braces. For patients with Invisalign, you have the more convenient option of slipping off your aligners and soothing your craving for a hard icy crunch by eating cold carrots, celery sticks or apples. These crunchy hard foods should still be avoided with braces, reminds Dr. Muench.

Have Questions for Our Vestal Orthodontist?

If chewing on ice is becoming a problem in your life, or if you have any other questions on the topic, give Muench Orthodontics a call. Our experienced doctor may be able to help you with this issue by preventing or repairing any damage to your teeth.

Voted Best Orthodontist in the Binghamton, NY Area – Our Expert Shares Advice About Retainers https://muenchorthodontics.com/best-orthodontist-in-binghamton-ny/ Fri, 13 Jul 2018 11:37:28 +0000 http://muenchorthodontics.com/?p=1256

best orthodontist in binghamton nySo, you’ve wrapped up your orthodontic treatment and are looking forward to a beautiful, new smile, but then our orthodontist near Binghamton breaks the news that you still have to wear a retainer! As if wearing braces for two years wasn’t enough, now you’re required to wear a clunky metal device – when will your mouth be back to normal?

At Muench Orthodontics, we understand the urgency behind wanting a straight smile as quickly as possible, but it’s important that you follow the proper steps in order to make your orthodontic treatment last a lifetime. That includes wearing your retainer for as long as our experienced orthodontic specialist recommends. (Dr. Muench wasn’t voted best orthodontist in the greater Binghamton area for nothing!) Luckily, with the advancements in modern orthodontia, retainers are no longer the clunky devices they once were.

Keep Your Teeth in Position with Your Retainer Advises Our Binghamton Area Orthodontist

The general purpose of a retainer is to prevent your teeth from shifting after your braces have been removed. Our team at Muench Orthodontics will provide you with a custom-fitted retainer that will provide your teeth with the stability they need to remain straight. Depending on your specific needs, you will be given one of the types described below.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are composed of an adjustable metal wire that holds your teeth in place, plus an acrylic arch that’s held to the roof of the mouth. These are the most common types of retainers used today.

Essix Retainers

This type of retainer is molded to fit over your teeth and is usually made of clear material, so it’s less noticeable when wearing.

Fixed Retainers

According to our orthodontist near Binghamton, this type is mainly used for those with serious teeth alignment issues, as fixed retainers are surgically placed on the inner side of the teeth beneath the tongue.
