What Is An Orthodontist & Why Should You See One?
While both dentists and orthodontists offer solutions for teeth problems, orthodontists leave the cleanings and cavities to dentists. With their additional schooling and special medical training, orthodontists focus on ensuring children’s teeth are straight through treatment such as braces, and that their jaws are aligned so they chew and eat properly – and enjoy a lifetime of perfect smiles.
Having straight teeth makes it easier for children to brush and floss daily, and typically will last through their lifetime with regular dental check-ups.
At What Age Your Child First See An Orthodontist?
This is a question we are asked a lot. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic check-up by the age of seven. Muench Orthodontics agrees with this recommendation as research and experience have shown us that there is no benefit to providing treatment to children prior to age seven.
But what about adults? We understand that many adults did not have access to orthodontic care as children and we are happy to help. In fact, 20% of our patients are adults, and while treatment with braces may take longer than with children, our adult patients are happy to receive treatment to achieve their best smile. It’s a philosophy of better late than never!
How Muench Orthodontics Saves Parents Time & Keeps Kids Studying in School
The average waiting time at the orthodontist office is about 30 minutes and treatment time an hour. Factor in leaving work to pick up your child then dropping them back off at school, then travel time back to work, and you’re looking at some serious missed time at both school and work. When you’re seeing the orthodontist once a month for two years that can add up to about 2.7 years of missed schooling for your child!
At Muench Orthodontics, our convenient hours of 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM Monday through Friday, and Saturday hours of 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM means you can avoid any missed time at work, and your child can keep learning at school.
Getting the Right Treatment at the Right Time
With orthodontics for children, timing is key in order to reach the goal of a healthy bite and beautiful smile, as well as prevent future issues with teeth and jaws. We are firm believers in providing interceptive and preventive steps for children to reach the desired and best results. Therefore, we recommend periodic evaluations to determine the best time to start treatment and which treatment is right for your child.
Typically, this means assessing the growth of your child’s face and jaws and overseeing the eruption of their permanent teeth. Some problems may not be properly fixed after the jaws are fully developed or permanent teeth have erupted, so starting treatment during the growth stage, while your child is young, is important in order to achieve optimal results. In addition, treatment at this time will very likely save you more time and money by reducing the likelihood of future problems that may be more complex and costly.
Here at Muench Orthodontics, we are proud of our record of shorter treatment times for braces and completing orthodontic care in the timeliest manner possible. Our patients and their parents are often surprised at the reduced amount of time our treatment provides. Often, braces are removed earlier than expected because of the proper timing of treatment. We respect your time and believe in being good stewards of it.
